International Association for the Study of Sexuality, Culture and
Society (IASSCS) |

The conference
will be hosted by the Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research
(WISER), and the Gay
and Lesbian Archives of South Africa (GALA), and The
Graduate School for the Humanities and Social Sciences, Faculty
of Humanities, University of the Witwatersrand,
Johannesburg from 22-25 June 2003.
Conference Programme
Preamble
The conference papers have been organised
into seven thematic clusters that will form the intellectual pillars
of Sex and Secrecy. These are The Power of the Secret; Confession and
Taboo; Hidden Codes, Local Rules; Unsettling Sexual and Gender Identities;
Sexuality, Sexual Meanings and HIV/AIDS; Public Discourse, Private Realms;
and The Politics of Sexuality: Global Sex, Local Practice.
Within these themes cognate papers have been
grouped together into smaller sessions. In grouping the papers the conference
convenors have generally avoided regional or topic based connections.
And have instead tried to devise sessions that will generate creative
conversations between delegates located in different disciplines and
across geographical and thematic boundaries.
Note: The Conference committee have
accommodated all time tabling requests and no further requests will
be entered into by the committee.
